A pet party invitation has one job that matters and it isn’t wording. It’s making sure nobody arrives with an animal that shouldn’t be there. Everything below is copy you can lift, sorted by species and tone, but read the four-line section first, because that’s the part that actually prevents a bad afternoon.

The Four Facts Every Invite Has to Carry

Most pet party invitations say when and where and stop. The four that get left off are the four that cause problems.

Whether guest animals are welcome, stated outright. Not implied by the phrase “dog party.” Somebody will read that as an invitation to bring theirs. Write it either way, in plain words.

What kind of animal is welcome, if any. “Friendly adult dogs, comfortable off lead” is a different guest list from “dogs of any age.” If your dog is reactive, small, elderly or recovering, this line is the whole invitation.

Whether children are coming, and whether they’ll be near the animal. Small children and unfamiliar animals need a decision made in advance, by you, not improvised at the door.

A quiet request about food. People bring food to parties. The ASPCA’s list of what harms pets includes chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic and chives, macadamia nuts, xylitol, alcohol and salty snacks, and a guest holding a brownie over a labrador has not read it. One friendly sentence on the invite does more than three signs on the day.

Add an RSVP that asks for something useful. Not “let me know,” but “reply with your dog’s name and whether they’re OK with other dogs.”

Dog Party, Guest Dogs Welcome

Plain and warm

Bramble is turning 6 and we’re having people over. Saturday 14 September, 2pm, at ours. Bring your dog if they’re comfortable around other dogs. There’ll be cake for them and coffee for you. Reply with your dog’s name so we can size the treat bags.

Playful

Bramble has been informed that a party is happening and has chosen to believe it’s about her. Saturday 14 September, 2pm. Friendly dogs welcome. Bring a lead, we’ll bring the cake. RSVP by Wednesday with your dog’s name and one thing they will absolutely try to steal.

Short, for a group chat

Bramble’s 6th. Sat 14th, 2pm, ours. Dogs welcome if they’re good with other dogs. Cake, garden, no formal anything. Yes or no by Wednesday?

Formal, for a bigger gathering

You are invited to celebrate Bramble’s sixth birthday. Saturday 14 September, from 2pm until 5pm. 12 Marlow Road. Dogs are welcome, on leads on arrival and off once everyone has met. Please let us know your dog’s name and any food they need to avoid. RSVP by 10 September.

Dog Party, No Guest Dogs

This is the harder invitation to write and the more important one. Say it early, say it once, and don’t apologise for a paragraph.

Direct

Come and celebrate Bramble’s 6th. Saturday 14 September, 2pm. Humans only this time. Bramble finds visiting dogs stressful and we’d rather she enjoyed her own party. There will be cake for everyone, including her.

Softer

Bramble is turning 6 and we’d love to see you. Saturday 14 September, 2pm, at ours. We’re keeping it to two legs only so Bramble can relax and be the centre of attention, which is her preference in all situations.

For a reactive or recovering dog, no explanation owed but one given anyway

Bramble’s birthday, Saturday 14 September, 2pm. Please come without your dog. Bramble is working through some reactivity with a trainer and a calm afternoon is the kind thing to give her. Small groups, quiet garden, excellent cake.

Formats for a dog who genuinely doesn’t want guests at all are in dog solo birthday party and dog birthday party for reactive dogs.

Cat Party

Cats do not attend parties. They tolerate a short window and then leave, which is worth signalling so nobody stands around waiting for a cat to socialise.

Honest and funny

Marzipan is 10. Saturday 14 September, 4pm, ours. She will appear for approximately eleven minutes, accept tribute, and then go to sleep on something expensive. Come for the cake and the eleven minutes. Humans only. Marzipan does not want to meet your cat, and your cat does not want to travel.

Straight

Marzipan’s 10th birthday, Saturday 14 September, 4pm. Humans only, no visiting cats. Please don’t chase her for photos. She’ll come out if the room is calm.

For a kitten’s first birthday

Marzipan is one year old and has destroyed one sofa in that time. Cake and drinks, Saturday 14 September, 4pm. Humans only. Bring nothing, she has too much already.

Bird, Reptile and Exotic Pet Invitations

For these species the party is a viewing rather than a gathering, and the invitation should say so plainly. Nobody is offended by clear rules; they’re offended by finding out at the door.

Bird

Pistachio the African grey turns 12 on Saturday. Come by any time after 2pm on 14 September. Two requests so he’s comfortable: nothing scented, and please don’t reach into the cage. He’ll come to the front on his own if the room is calm. Cake for us, chopped mango and millet for him.

That first request is not fussiness. Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne particles, and VCA’s guidance groups scented candles, diffusers, aerosols and hair products together with cooking fumes as respiratory hazards, with the plain test that if you can smell it, it may harm your bird. A guest arriving in a cloud of perfume is a real problem, and one sentence on the invite solves it.

Reptile

Kevin the bearded dragon is 4. Drop in Saturday 14 September, 2pm to 5pm. He’s staying in his enclosure, which is where he wants to be. Look, take photos, don’t tap the glass. Hand washing before and after, please, for everyone’s sake.

Tarantula, mantis or other invertebrate

Nine is a good age for a tarantula and Sadie has reached it. Saturday 14 September, from 3pm. No handling, no flash photography, no sudden vibrations near the enclosure. She is not dangerous and she is not a prop. There is cake, for the humans, obviously.

Fish or aquarium anniversary

The tank is three years old this month, which is longer than some of my friendships. Saturday 14 September, 7pm. Drinks, snacks, and a slow tour of what’s in there. Please don’t tap.

For a reptile the invitation is doing crowd control. "Look, don't handle" printed in advance is far easier than saying it eleven times on the day. Photo: Irhanz / Wikimedia Commons. CC BY-SA 4.0.

Small Mammal Parties

Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, ferrets, chinchillas and hamsters all need the same two lines: no visiting animals, and quiet.

Rabbit or guinea pig

Clementine is 5. Saturday 14 September, 3pm. Please come without your dog. She’s a prey animal and a strange dog in the room is stressful for her even from across it. She’ll be doing a dig box. It will go everywhere. That’s the entertainment.

Nocturnal species, and the timing that follows

Biscuit the chinchilla is 7 and is asleep all afternoon, so this is an evening thing. Saturday 14 September, 8pm. Dust bath at half past, which is genuinely the best thing you’ll see all week. Cool room, quiet voices, no visiting pets.

Chinchillas in particular need that “cool room” line to be real rather than decorative. VCA’s housing guidance keeps them below 80°F with humidity under 40 to 50 percent and notes they’re highly susceptible to heat stroke, and a room full of guests runs warmer than the same room empty.

Gotcha Day Invitations

For a rescue animal whose birthday nobody knows, the adoption date is the date that’s actually true. The wording gets to acknowledge that, and it lands better than a made up birthday does.

Warm

Two years ago on Saturday we drove home with a very frightened dog in the back seat. Come and mark it with us. 14 September, 2pm. Rowan is a different animal now. Cake, garden, friendly dogs welcome.

Understated

Rowan’s second gotcha day. Saturday 14 September, from 2pm. No gifts. If you want to do something, the shelter he came from takes old towels.

For a first gotcha day, still settling in

One year since we adopted Rowan. Saturday 14 September, 2pm, and deliberately small: four people, no other dogs, no fuss. He’s come a long way and a quiet afternoon is the point.

The full tradition, including why so many rescue owners find this date more meaningful than a guessed birthday, is in gotcha day party ideas and gotcha day vs birthday.

Milestone Wording: Puppies, Kittens and Senior Pets

First birthday

Juno is one. She has eaten two remote controls and learned exactly one command. Saturday 14 September, 2pm. Come and celebrate whichever of those you find more impressive.

Senior pet, without being maudlin

Ash is 14 on Saturday and still insists on the long route home. 14 September, 3pm, quiet and short. He tires quickly and we’ll wrap up by five. Come and say hello to a very good old dog.

A milestone you’re marking for yourself

Ten years of Bramble. Saturday 14 September, 2pm, and yes, we know.

Formats matched to age are in puppy first birthday party, kitten first birthday, senior dog birthday party and senior cat birthday.

The Practical Bits

Format. A group chat message gets a faster reply than anything printed, and for five guests that’s the right tool. Paper is worth it when the invitation is part of the keepsake, which is usually a first birthday or a milestone gotcha day. If you want the physical version, plain blank kraft cards with a printed photo stuck on beat anything pre printed with paw prints.

The photo. Use a recent one, taken in the room the party will happen in, with the animal doing something ordinary. A studio shot of a dog in a bow tie sets the wrong expectation for an afternoon in a garden.

Timing. Send a week to ten days out for a small gathering. Two weeks if guests need to arrange anything, including a dog sitter for the dog you told them not to bring.

RSVP deadline. Give a date, not “let me know.” You’re sizing favour bags and cake against it.

What to leave off. Registry style gift lists. Long apologies. Anything implying guests must dress up. Dietary instructions for the humans, unless you’re feeding them properly.

One Template You Can Adapt to Anything

[Name] is turning [age] and we’re marking it. [Day, date], [time], at [place]. [Guest animals: welcome and on what terms, or not this time and why in one clause.] [One line about what will actually happen.] [Food note if human food will be around animals.] RSVP by [date] with [the specific thing you need to know].

Six lines. Everything in this guide is a variation on it.

Once the invitations are out, the rest of the plan is in the pet birthday party checklist, the costs are in pet birthday party budget, and the activities that work per species are in pet birthday party games.
