Madagascar hissing cockroaches are omnivores and scavengers. They eat a wide variety of foods, which makes the birthday feast genuinely varied in a way that strict insectivores or herbivores canβt be. The colony birthday spread is a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables alongside a dry protein component, presented in the enclosure for the colony to forage through over 12 to 24 hours. Remove anything fresh before it molds or attracts pests. The birthday feast is abundance and variety, more diversity than the usual daily feeding, not dramatically more quantity.
What Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches Can Eat at a Birthday Party
Fresh fruits (birthday favorites):
- Apple pieces (seeds removed)
- Banana pieces
- Orange pieces or segments (citrus is accepted by MHCs, unlike many other species)
- Strawberry
- Watermelon
- Grape (seedless)
- Mango
Vegetables:
- Leafy greens: romaine, kale, collard greens
- Sweet potato pieces (cooked or raw)
- Carrot pieces
- Cucumber, zucchini
- Corn
- Peas (fresh or thawed)
Unlike some other invertebrate colony pets β giant African millipedes, for instance, which are strict detritivores β hissing cockroaches are omnivores that genuinely need a protein component in the spread. Thatβs the main difference if youβre comparing the two feasts: the fruit and veg overlaps almost completely, but the dry protein items below donβt have a millipede equivalent. If you keep both species in adjacent enclosures, keep the high-protein items separate rather than sharing a scatter-feed between them.
Dry protein components (kept in the enclosure longer without spoiling):
- High-quality dry cat food or dog food (plain, without onion or garlic in ingredients)
- Dry oatmeal
- Cereal without sugar (plain, not frosted or flavored)
- Egg (hard-boiled, small pieces), occasional protein treat
- Dried mealworms (without additives)
Leaf litter: Oak leaves or other dried leaves are both food and enrichment. A pile of clean dried leaves for the birthday is appreciated by the colony and will be consumed over days.
What Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches Cannot Eat
Onion and garlic (including in cat/dog food). Check the ingredient list of any commercial dry food offered. Onion and garlic are toxic to many insects and invertebrates and should not be in any cockroach food.
Avocado. Per ASPCA guidance, avoid for most pets. Skip.
Highly processed food with salt or artificial preservatives. No chips, crackers, or heavily processed human snack food. Plain bread is technically fine in a pinch, most colonies will eat it, but itβs not nutritionally complete and goes moldy fast. Skip it for something that actually contributes to the spread.
Wild-caught insects. If adding any live insect component (some keepers do this for novelty), captive-bred only.
Moldy or spoiled food. Hissing cockroaches will eat some rotting material in the wild, but moldy food in captivity can host pathogenic molds. Remove fresh food within 24 to 48 hours, faster in summer: a warm, humid enclosure can have fruit fermenting in as little as 12 hours. The dry protein items (oatmeal, dry cat food, dried mealworms) hold up much better and can stay in 3 to 5 days before you need to swap them out.
Presentation: Scatter-Feeding for Foraging Enrichment
Rather than placing birthday food in one dish, scatter it across the enclosure floor at different locations and heights. Hissing cockroaches forage naturally and the scatter-feed approach turns the birthday feast into enrichment: the colony finds and investigates each food item individually.
This approach also lets you observe the colonyβs preferences. Most colonies have food items they consistently prioritize (often banana or apple) and others they eventually get to. The preference observation is minor keeper knowledge that accumulates over the colonyβs life.
Party Supplies
- Grain-Free Dry Cat Food (No Onion or Garlic), the dry protein component of the colonyβs birthday spread, check the ingredient list stays onion- and garlic-free.
- Dried Oak Leaf Litter for Bioactive Enclosures, leaf litter that doubles as birthday food and enrichment the colony forages through for days.
- Shallow Insect Feeding Dish, a low-lip dish for scattering the fresh fruit and veg spread across the enclosure floor.
