What Cockatiels Can Eat at a Birthday Party: Safe Foods and the Teflon Warning That Saves Lives
Complete AAV and ASPCA-verified list of safe and unsafe foods for cockatiel birthday parties. What cockatiels can eat as treats, what's toxic to birds, and the Teflon/PTFE fume warning that every cockatiel owner needs to know.

Cockatiels are seed-and-pellet parrots with a safe fresh food list very similar to other small parrots. The toxic foods list for cockatiels is the same as for all parrots, bird-specific toxicants that differ from the mammal list. The most commonly missed danger in birthday party settings is the Teflon/PTFE warning, which applies whenever cooking happens near a bird.
Safe Foods
Per AAV cockatiel nutrition guidance:
Best birthday treats:
- Millet spray — the universal cockatiel treat. Birthday occasion, millet spray occasion. A fresh sprig from any pet store runs $5 to $8.
- Bell pepper (all colors), nutritious, most cockatiels accept it
- Fresh leafy greens: romaine, arugula, dandelion greens (pesticide-free)
- Broccoli (small floret)
- Cooked plain sweet potato (a small piece)
- Fresh herbs: parsley, cilantro, basil
- Cucumber
- Carrot (small piece, grated if needed)
- Cooked plain egg (a very small amount, protein treat)
- Blueberries or other small berries
- Pomegranate seeds
- Small piece of apple (seeds removed)
What to Avoid
Avocado (all parts): Persin is lethal to birds. Any variety, any part.
Teflon/PTFE fumes: This is the most important item on this list for party safety. When Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE) non-stick cookware is overheated, it releases fumes that kill birds within minutes. Cockatiels are particularly sensitive. If you’re baking a birthday cake or cooking any food at your party, do not use Teflon cookware anywhere near the bird’s space. Use stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware near birds.
Onion and garlic: Hemolytic anemia.
Chocolate and caffeine: Toxic.
Xylitol: Found in sugar-free products.
Fruit pits and apple seeds: Cyanogenic compounds.
Salt and heavily processed food.
Alcohol.
The Teflon/PTFE Summary
- Teflon-coated non-stick pans release PTFE fumes when overheated (above 500°F, though lower temps can also cause issues)
- The fumes cause a condition called PTFE Toxicosis / Polymer Fume Fever in birds
- Cockatiels and other small parrots can die within hours of exposure
- Move the bird to a well-ventilated room away from the kitchen before any cooking
- Replace Teflon cookware in households with birds; use stainless or cast iron
