What Can Hermit Crabs Eat at a Birthday Party? The Safe List and What Kills Them
Hermit crab birthday food guide: safe natural foods, what commercial hermit crab food actually contains and why to skip it, the copper sulfate warning, and the complete no-list. Hermit Crab Association verified.

Hermit crabs can eat a surprisingly wide range of natural whole foods at a birthday party, and the birthday feast is exactly the kind of varied, fresh spread they need. What they cannot eat is commercial hermit crab food. The brightly colored pellets and freeze-dried shrimp mixes in those little tins at the pet store contain copper sulfate (a preservative that’s toxic to crustaceans with prolonged exposure) and ethoxyquin, neither of which belongs in a hermit crab enclosure. The Hermit Crab Association community has documented these issues extensively. For the birthday, fresh food only.
The Commercial Food Warning
Almost every commercially sold “hermit crab food” product contains copper sulfate as a preservative. Per the Hermit Crab Association’s care documentation, copper sulfate is harmful to hermit crabs with regular exposure. The community’s position is to avoid all commercial hermit crab food and feed fresh whole foods instead. For a birthday feast, this means the treat spread you’re about to read, not anything from a pet store can.
Also avoid: chlorinated tap water in either dish (freshwater or saltwater). Use dechlorinated water or bottled spring water. Chlorine harms the gills.

The Birthday Feast Presentation
Hermit crabs are scavengers and forage for food. Rather than placing everything in one dish, scatter birthday food items at different heights and locations in the enclosure. Place some on flat cork bark, some on the substrate surface, some at the food dish location. The foraging behavior is enrichment itself and makes for good observation content.
The birthday is also the occasion to refresh both water dishes (freshwater dechlorinated and saltwater with marine-grade aquarium salt, not table salt) and add a fresh cuttlebone.
What Hermit Crabs Cannot Eat
Commercial hermit crab food. Copper sulfate content. See above.
Tap water (chlorinated). Used directly in either water dish. Dechlorinate or use spring water.
Salt. Table salt, iodized salt, and any salt beyond what’s needed for the marine-grade saltwater dish. Not a food seasoning.
Onion, garlic, chives. Toxic to crustaceans.
Avocado. Per ASPCA guidance, avoid avocado for most pets. Skip it.
Citrus in large amounts. Small pieces of citrus are accepted by some crabs, but the acidity can irritate the digestive system. Keep it minimal or skip it.
Processed food with salt, preservatives, or artificial flavors. Crackers, chips, seasoned food, anything with additives.
Painted shells. Not food, but relevant to birthday gifts: painted shells are harmful to hermit crabs. The paint is toxic. Birthday shell gifts should be natural, unpainted shells only.

FAQ
Can hermit crabs eat birthday cake with fresh fruit as the only ingredient?
If the “cake” is pressed fresh fruit with no additives, no sugar, no baking, and no salt, small pieces are fine as enrichment. Hermit crabs won’t engage with anything baked or cooked with flour or butter. A “hermit crab birthday cake” is a flat piece of dried coconut topped with dried mango pieces. That’s it.
How much should I feed on the birthday?
Hermit crabs don’t overeat in the way mammals do. A variety spread of 6 to 8 different small items through the enclosure is appropriate. Remove any uneaten fresh food within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold in the humid enclosure.
Can hermit crabs eat meat?
In the wild, hermit crabs are opportunistic scavengers that eat carrion. Small amounts of plain cooked protein (unseasoned cooked chicken, plain boiled fish, a piece of boiled egg) are accepted. This is a treat-level offering, not a staple.
The shells near the food, are those okay for the crabs?
A hermit crab may investigate or try on any shells it encounters. Birthday shell gifts are the most meaningful present you can give a hermit crab. Natural, unpainted shells of appropriate size placed near the enclosure feeding area will be investigated during the birthday night.
