African Pygmy Hedgehogs are insectivores with some omnivore flexibility. Their diet in the wild consists primarily of insects, worms, and small vertebrates, supplemented by fruit and eggs found opportunistically. In captivity, obesity is one of the most common health problems, captive hedgehogs are less active than wild hedgehogs and high-fat treats quickly cause weight gain that stresses the heart and liver.

A birthday treat for a hedgehog should be insect-forward and not heavily fruit-based.

Safe Foods

Per VCA Hospitals hedgehog feeding guidelines:

Best birthday treats:

  • Dried or live mealworms β€” the premium hedgehog treat. Most hedgehogs pursue mealworms immediately. A 2-ounce resealable pouch runs $8 to $12 at most pet stores and stays fresh for months.
  • Live or frozen mealworms (some hedgehogs prefer live)
  • Crickets, another good insect option
  • Plain cooked chicken (tiny piece)
  • Plain cooked egg white (very small amount)

Safe fruit (small amounts, occasional):

  • Blueberry (1–2)
  • A small strawberry piece
  • Melon (tiny cube)
  • Apple (no seeds, small piece)

Safe vegetables:

  • Cooked plain sweet potato (tiny piece)
  • Cooked carrot (tiny piece)
  • Cooked peas (a few)

The Obesity and Fat Warning

Hedgehogs don’t regulate their food intake well in captivity. High-fat treats, waxworms are particularly problematic, offered regularly cause fatty liver disease and cardiac stress. Birthday treat guidelines:

  • Mealworms as the birthday treat: Appropriate in moderate amounts. Not a daily food, but a birthday serving is fine.
  • Waxworms: Very high fat. One waxworm as the most premium birthday treat is occasionally acceptable; waxworms should never become a regular treat.
  • Fruit: Small amounts are fine as birthday additions, not as the primary treat.

What to Avoid

Avocado: Persin toxicity.

Grapes and raisins: Potential kidney issues in small mammals.

Onion and garlic: Toxic.

Chocolate: Toxic.

Citrus in large amounts: GI upset.

Wild-caught insects: Parasite and pesticide risk. Insects from pet stores or clean captive-bred sources only.

Dairy: Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant. No milk, cheese, or yogurt.
