Guinea Pig Gotcha Day: How to Celebrate the Day Your Cavy Came Home

How to celebrate a guinea pig's Gotcha Day: what to do for a rescue pig without a known birthday, the enrichment and treat format that works, and why adoption anniversaries are worth marking.

Most guinea pigs in American homes came from shelters, rescues, or pet stores with no known hatch date. Shelters estimate ages; pet store pigs have no documented history. The Gotcha Day, the day you brought them home, is the date you know. It’s worth celebrating.

A guinea pig Gotcha Day is a slightly better version of a good day: the best foods they love, a new enrichment item, and time. The guinea pig doesn’t know it’s a special occasion. You do.

The Gotcha Day Format

Same principles as the birthday:

  • A fresh herb and vegetable treat spread (see guinea pig birthday party ideas)
  • One new enrichment item introduced today
  • Extended free-roam time if the guinea pig is already comfortable with floor time
  • Photos

For rescue guinea pigs who are still settling in: If your pig is newly adopted and still stress-adjusting, a Gotcha Day should be extra calm rather than extra active. Better food, a new hide or a cardboard box in their space, your quiet presence, not a lot of changes or stimulation. Guinea pigs take several weeks to fully relax in a new home; don’t push the celebration past what the pig is ready for.

The Treat Spread

A Gotcha Day treat spread is the same as the birthday spread: bell pepper strips, fresh parsley, romaine, and a small piece of strawberry. The Vitamin C rule applies here as always, see what guinea pigs can eat at a party for the full safe foods reference.

For the enrichment gift on a Gotcha Day: a new foraging mat is ideal — it gives the pig something to work through that they’ve never encountered before. Small-animal foraging mats run $10 to $15 at pet stores and online.

Gotcha Day vs. Birthday

If your guinea pig came from a rescue and you don’t have a hatch date, the Gotcha Day is the birthday. If you have both (from a reputable breeder who provided the hatch date), celebrating both is a reasonable choice, they’re different occasions with different meanings.
