Finch Flock Anniversary: How to Celebrate a Zebra Finch or Gouldian Finch Colony's Special Day
How to celebrate a finch flock's anniversary or birthday: the colony celebration format, safe treats for finches, cage enrichment, and why finch birthdays are really flock anniversaries.

Finches (Zebra Finches, Gouldian Finches, Society Finches, Bengalese, Owl Finches) are colony birds, they should always be kept in groups of at least two, usually more. A birthday for an individual finch is impractical since finches are small, fast, visually difficult to distinguish from companions, and donβt have the individual human-bonding that larger parrots do.
The finch anniversary is a flock event: a colony food upgrade, a fresh water day, and new nest material.
The Flock Anniversary Format
The colony treat: Fresh food items placed in multiple locations throughout the aviary so every bird has access. Finches compete for food at single locations; spread it.
New nest materials: A bundle of fresh soft nesting material (coconut fiber, burlap strips, moss). Finches build and rebuild constantly, new material gets immediate use.
Fresh water and bath day: A clean fresh water bath station plus fresh drinking water. Finches bathe frequently; a birthday bath is a real event for them.

Safe Treats
- Millet spray (the universal finch treat β a fresh sprig at $5 to $8 works for the whole flock simultaneously)
- Small spray millet hung at various cage heights
- Grated carrot or zucchini
- Fresh greens: dandelion greens, watercress
- Boiled egg (a small piece), protein supplement during breeding season and as a birthday treat
Avoid: Avocado, onion, garlic, chocolate, citrus, salty foods.
Finch and Canary Birthday Supplies
Small birds do best with foraging enrichment and fresh millet:
- Millet Holder 2-Pack (Stainless Steel), fresh millet spray hung in the cage. The primary birthday treat.
- PBIEHSR Bird Foraging Toys Seagrass, small-scale foraging toy appropriate for finches and canaries.
