Ferret Gotcha Day: Celebrating the Day Your Business Came Together
How to celebrate a ferret's Gotcha Day or adoption anniversary: the enrichment-and-treat format for an obligate carnivore, and why ferret rescues make Gotcha Day particularly meaningful.

Most pet ferrets in the US come from Marshall Farms (the primary commercial ferret breeder) or from ferret shelters. A significant portion of pet ferrets are rescues, ferrets surrendered due to unexpected care needs or behavioral issues. For rescue ferrets without a known birthday, the Gotcha Day is the meaningful date.
A ferret Gotcha Day is an enrichment event with a carnivore-appropriate treat. No fruit, no grain, no sugar. Freeze-dried meat, a new tunnel, and your attention.
The Ferret Gotcha Day Format
The treat: A freeze-dried single-protein treat (duck, rabbit, chicken) as the special occasion food. Or a small piece of cooked plain chicken or turkey if the ferret has had it before. Ferrets are strict obligate carnivores β any fruit, grain, or sweet treat is harmful. Look for single-ingredient freeze-dried meat treats; a 1 to 2 ounce pouch runs $6 to $14.
The new tunnel: Ferrets are obsessed with tunnels. A new crinkle tunnel or a new tube section is the Gotcha Day gift that gets the most consistent daily use. Crinkle tunnels run $10 to $18; flexible tube extensions $5 to $12.
The weasel war dance viewing: A ferret whoβs excited about a new tunnel or a new enrichment item will dook (happy chattering sound) and do the weasel war dance (frantic excited bouncing). If youβve never seen this, the Gotcha Day enrichment introduction is a good occasion to witness it.
Extended free-roam: More out-of-cage time than usual, in a ferret-proofed room. This is what ferrets want most.

For Rescue Ferrets
Many ferrets arrive from shelters or previous homes with behaviors that take time to settle, nipping, defensive responses, unfamiliar territory anxiety. A Gotcha Day early in the relationship should be calm: better food, one new item, no extra visitors or activity that overloads a still-adjusting ferret.
As the relationship deepens, Gotcha Days can become more involved.
